Golf in the Islands
Majorca, with its beautiful natural landscape and fantastic climate
has become one of the most popular destinations in Europe and is just
over two hours flight time from the most important airports in Europe.
From 1960's MAJORCA started its development as a Tourist destination
and over such a long period of time those involved in tourism have refined
and developed this industry and now golf fulfils the expectations set
by the Balearic Government of diversification of the Tourist offer.
Golf was first introduced to MAJORCA in the early 1930’s, but no trace
of the original course remains today. And it was in 1964 when the first
golf course was built in MAJORCA, Son Vida Golf, followed by Son Servera
Golf in 1967 and in 1970’s Santa Ponsa and Poniente , in 1990 the number
of golf courses had risen to 10 and in 2000 boost to 16.
MAJORCA has now firmly signaled its intention to become a major golfing
destination with 23 golf courses and some additional developments in
the advanced planning stages.
MAJORCA offers the discerning golfer a year-round challenge of championship-standard
courses.
The South West specially the Calvia coast offers a combination of well
equipped resorts and the majority of the island's courses. Eight excellent
courses within a short drive, such as Santa Ponsa golf (3 courses) has
hold 6 PGA tournaments, Poniente with magnificent panoramic views and
designed by the well-known architect Mr. John Harris, Golf Bendinat,
and Golf de Andraxt and in the city of Palma, Son Vida the oldest established
course in the island, dating back to the late 1950s, Son Muntaner and
recently inaugurated Son Quint, all belonging to the group Arabella
Starwood.
Stay in Palma Nova, Santa Ponsa, Portals Nous, Magalluf whatever your
impressions of Magaluf are, it is an ideal base for individual golfers,
groups or societies with many comfortable hotels for all budgets.
These resorts offer an animated nightlife and a full range of dining
experiences from the gourmet's delight that is Puerto Portals, to the
more informal restaurants and bars of Santa Ponsa, Magalluf and Palma
Nova.

d'Or golf course opened in 1985, nearby Porto Colom and Cala D'Or resorts.
If you decide to stay in the relaxing and quieter North East of the
island you will find another four championship golf courses close to
hand. The golf courses Pula that has already hosted events of the PGA
Tour as the Turespaña MAJORCA Classic Open. Canyamel a very challenging
course designed by Pepe Gancedo and Capdepera offers a varied game of
golf.
Located at MAJORCA's North Coast we will arrive to Alcanada, designed
by Robert Trent Jones, a course with and spectacular view over the Mediterranean
Sea, the scenic small island of Alcanada and the Bay of Alcudia.
A short drive direction to Pollensa the 9 holes course Golf Pollensa.
At last but not least we can't forget the new golf courses, Golf Maioris,
Golf Park MAJORCA with a design signed by the renown Nicklaus Design
Company and Golf Son Gual will host MAJORCA Senior Open an European
Senior Tour event, these courses are a short drive from Palma.
